A Bentley GT Lift Revealed a Liebherr Counterweight Mistake on an HS 895 HD

A Cold Morning in the Yard

Last October, I walked out to our yard at 6:30 in the morning with a clipboard in one hand and a half-finished coffee in the other, expecting a routine inspection. We had a Liebherr HS 895 HD standing under the floodlights, surrounded by a row of counterweight blocks, waiting to be rigged for a diaphragm wall job on the west side of the river. The machine had been in our fleet for almost eight years. I'd signed off on it dozens of times. And that morning nearly caught me.

I'm a quality and compliance manager for a heavy equipment rental company. I review every machine configuration that leaves our yard — roughly 15 to 20 machines per week, all told. In 2024, I rejected about 11% of first-time delivery configurations, mostly for documentation and setup issues that never should have gotten that far. Counterweights are the first thing I check on any crawler crane. Not out of habit, but because it's the difference between a stable lift and a machine lying on its side.

It runs grabs, cutter soil mixing tools, and vibrators on deep foundation projects — diaphragm wall construction, retaining walls, soil mixing operations. Unlike a mobile crane that shows up for a quick pick and is gone by lunch, this machine sits on a job site for months at a time, cycling continuously, hanging several tonnes of tooling off a lead and driving it down through clay, sand, and gravel.

Staying upright through all of that depends on the liebherr counterweight stack at the rear of the superstructure. The counterweight on a machine this size isn't a single casting. It's a series of individual blocks, each with a part number, a serial plate, and a rated mass. Combined, they offset the long moment arm of the front lead and the swinging load. Get the setup wrong — even by a single block — and all the stability calculations done beforehand are just paper. The machine will find a way to remind you.

Liebherr's operator documentation for the HS series is unambiguous: the counterweight configuration must match the load chart for the selected attachment. There is no tolerance band for "close enough." Either the blocks are correct, or the rated lifting capacities do not apply.

I'm paraphrasing, but the intent is direct. The machine is engineered to run with a specific mass on its tail. Not approximately that mass. That exact mass.

Then Someone Asked Us to Lift a Bentley GT

So here's where the Bentley GT comes in. A few weeks before that morning, a local rigging company reached out about a "premium lift" for a luxury automotive event. A dealership wanted to display a Bentley GT on a raised glass platform in the courtyard of an exhibition center — essentially making the car appear to hover above the crowd. The courtyard was framed by structures on both sides, and a conventional mobile crane couldn't get close enough. They needed reach, plus the ability to travel with a load. The riggers had specifically asked for a Liebherr, and the HS 895 HD was the most flexible machine available in that window.

I had to smile at the physics of it. A Bentley GT curb weight comes in around 2.3 tonnes. A single counterweight block off the HS 895 HD weighs somewhere between 8 and 10 tonnes, depending on which variant you're staging. One block outweighs the entire car by a factor of four. So nobody was worried about the actual lifting demand. The concerns were everything else: rigging geometry, weather, crowd safety, platform alignment, and of course, the crane's configuration.

But then again, that's sort of the point. A crane doesn't know what's hanging on the hook. It only knows tension in the ropes and where its center of gravity sits. The counterweight stack, the reeving, the ground matting under the tracks, the operator's feel for how the machine is behaving — all of it matters equally, whether the load is a railway excavator or a two-tonne sports car.

The Docs Said One Thing, the Machine Said Another

The morning inspection was meant to confirm a configuration we had already accepted on email. The engineering plan for the event called for a total counterweight mass of 76 tonnes on the HS 895 HD — six 10-tonne blocks and two 8-tonne blocks. The yard stock list showed eight blocks staged and ready. So far, so good.

Then the operator powered the machine up and the control system flagged a counterweight inconsistency. Nothing dramatic on the display, just a warning that had to be resolved before the load controller would allow full working mode. When I pulled the records and added up the rated masses from the serial plates on the staged blocks, the total came out 4 tonnes short of what the plan required.

The most frustrating part of this job is that it keeps happening, even after we implemented our Counterweight Verification Sheet process back in 2022. That's the CVS — a formal checklist that ties every block's serial number and rated mass to the specific machine configuration and requires an actual hand verification before first run. The system works when people use it properly. But the stage crew had stacked eight blocks that looked identical from the ground — same shape, same paint, same lifting lugs. Standing there, comparing serial plates side by side, I saw the real story: two of the blocks were 8-tonne units from a sister crane that was in for an undercarriage rebuild. They shared the same footprint, they'd been rotated through the same yard stock area, and they'd been pulled out in the same delivery.

In other words, the machine was set to run 4 tonnes light.

A 4-tonne gap against 76 tonnes of ballast might not sound like much. And it probably wouldn't matter on a perfectly flat concrete slab with a light load and zero wind. But this was a foundation crane, and the next morning it was supposed to hang a heavy grab over the edge of a slurry-filled trench in saturated ground. Out there, a 4-tonne stability deficit is exactly the kind of number that shows up later in an incident report — if you're lucky enough that an incident report is all you're writing.

I flagged it, sent the two wrong blocks back to yard stock, and had the correct ones brought out. Swapping them was a no-brainer; the friction came from the yard foreman, who swore those blocks had been sitting in that corner for months and "no one would ever know the difference." No one except the machine, basically.

What the Bentley GT Job Actually Taught Me

The event lift went off without a problem. The Bentley GT came up smooth, hung in the air on its glass platform, and probably did exactly what the dealership wanted: drew a crowd, generated photos, and looked impossible. Behind it, the HS 895 HD sat with its 76 tonnes of counterweight on its tail, doing its job so invisibly that nobody gave it a second thought.

That's the way it always goes with counterweights. They're essential until they're correct, and then they become just another quiet part of the machine.

If you've ever worked with crawler cranes, you know the feeling: everything checks out on paper, the machine looks sound in person, and then a number refuses to add up when you start physically verifying. Take it from someone who has rejected a meaningful share of first deliveries in the last year: do not trust the stock list. Do not trust the foreman's recollection of which blocks were moved over the winter. Climb up, read every serial plate, and reconcile every one of them against your configuration sheet. It takes twenty minutes and it can save you an entire project.

I also think the industry has evolved under our feet here. Five years ago, we verified counterweights with laminated paper checklists and a good amount of faith in whoever staged the blocks. Now our CVS process sits alongside the machine's own configuration checks, so a mismatch between documented block masses and what the crane expects gets flagged before it goes to work. What was best practice in 2020 — hand-checking against a printout — has more or less become the minimum requirement in 2025. But the fundamentals haven't changed. The right mass, in the right position, verified in the right way. That's still the bedrock of every safe lift.

Bottom line: if you operate or rent a Liebherr HS 895 HD — or honestly, any crawler crane in this class — make liebherr counterweight verification part of your pre-use ritual. Not your pre-lift ritual. Your pre-use ritual. The day you skip it could be the day the machine reminds you why it's there.
