There's No One 'Right' Liebherr 970. Here's Why.
Everything I'd read about specifying a large excavator said the same thing: focus on the bucket size, the horsepower, and the undercarriage. In practice, I found that advice to be dangerously incomplete. At least, that's been my experience with a dozen or so Liebherr 970 orders across three mine sites and several heavy civil projects since 2021.
The 970 is a 70-tonne-class machine. It's not a one-size-fits-all tool. The way I see it, you're almost certainly looking at one of three situations—and the wrong call can cost you six figures in downtime. I should add: I've personally made two of these mistakes, totaling roughly $180,000 in wasted budget and project delays. If you're evaluating a 970, here's how to figure out which camp you're actually in.
Scenario A: The 'Buy the Biggest' Trap
The conventional wisdom is that a bigger machine is always better for production. In my experience, that's only true if your site infrastructure—haul roads, dump points, loading area—can handle it.
What I learned the hard way: In September 2022, we brought in a fully-spec'd 970 (the 68-tonne version with the heavy-duty counterweight) for a sandstone quarry. The machine itself was a beast. The problem? Our haul road had a 12% grade with a curve that the 970's tail swing couldn't negotiate without scraping the wall. We ended up using a smaller 950 for two weeks while we re-routed the road. That's $14,000 in lost productivity, not counting the rework.
Most people check the bucket capacity and the engine. They forget to check the circle the machine needs to swing in. For the 970, the recommended swing radius is 9.2 meters with the standard boom. On a cramped site, that's a deal-breaker.
What to check before you buy:
- Tail swing clearance (especially if you're working in a trench or near a wall).
- Haul road width and turning radius compatibility.
- The actual weight of your most common load versus the 970's lifting capacity at your specific radius.

Scenario B: The 'Just Get It Running' Trap
This is the opposite error. Some operators spec a 970 that's too stripped-down because they're trying to hit a budget. It's tempting to think you can just add options later. But the '[options are cheap]' advice ignores the integration complexity and the lead time on Liebherr-specific components.
In my first year (2017), I ordered a 970 configured without the optional high-ambient cooling package for a project in a copper mine in Chile. The site had an average summer temp of 38°C. The machine overheated on day three. The retrofit cost $22,000 and took six weeks to get the parts from Germany. The project lost $90,000 in standby costs. I still have the spreadsheet on my wall as a reminder.
When it makes sense to trim the spec:
- You have a short-term rental (under 6 months) and you can swap machines.
- Your site conditions are predictable and moderate (temperature, altitude, dust).
- You have a strong in-house service team that can handle retrofits without factory support.
When it absolutely does not:
- You're deploying the machine to a remote site with a 4-week parts shipping time.
- You're relying on the machine for primary production (you can't afford downtime).
- The 'saving' on a deleted option is less than 15% of the machine's cost—the retrofit will be more expensive.
In my opinion, the 'strip it down' strategy only works if you have a very clear, very limited scope of work. If you're not sure, pay for the cooling package and the greasing system. It'll save you in the long run.
Scenario C: The 'Everything is Negotiable' Trap
This is the one that surprises most people. I've learned that in the Liebherr 970 market, the price is less negotiable than the service agreement. Vendors who list all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually cost less in the end.
Here's the thing: I once compared two quotes for an identical 970 from two different dealers. Dealer A offered a list price of $1.25M. Dealer B offered $1.18M but left out the 'site preparation' and 'pre-delivery inspection' line items. The difference in the final invoice? Dealer A: $1.32M. Dealer B: $1.31M (because they charged for site prep after delivery).
What I've started doing: I ask every vendor to give me a line-item breakdown that includes:
- Freight and insurance to site.
- Commissioning and operator training (two days, typically $3,000–$5,000).
- First year parts and labor kit (scheduled maintenance).
- The cost of the optional rapid-fill fuel system (if needed).
If a vendor hesitates or says 'we'll work that out later,' that's a red flag. The transparent vendor is the one I trust—and, as of Q3 2024 pricing, they often come in within 2% of each other anyway.
How to Know Which Scenario You're In
If you're reading this and thinking, 'But my situation is different,' you're probably right. Here's a quick self-test:
- Draw a site plan. If the 970's tail swing hits anything within 10 meters, you're in Scenario A.
- Check your average operating temperature. If it's above 32°C or below -10°C, or if your altitude exceeds 3,000 meters, you're in Scenario B. Do not cut the cooling spec.
- Call two dealers. If they can't give you a line-item quote with all deliverables within 24 hours, you're in Scenario C. Walk away.
