Why I’m Comparing a Dump Truck and a Crane

I keep getting calls from mine managers who say, "We need a Liebherr. Which one should we buy?" Usually they mention the Liebherr TA 230 and the Liebherr LTM 1060 in the same sentence because both have "Liebherr" on the side. It’s like asking what is skiing versus downhill skiing? On the surface they’re both winter sports. But they need different gear, different skills, and different terrain. Once you understand that, the decision gets clearer.

I’ve spent eight years coordinating urgent equipment replacements for mining and construction sites. In that time I’ve arranged more than 200 rush jobs—maybe 210, I’d have to check the CRM—and the worst ones almost always happened because someone was comparing machines that weren’t actually in the same category.

A Quick Mental Model for the Two Models

The TA 230 is an articulated dump truck. It moves loose material over rough ground—from an excavation to a crusher, from a cut to a fill, from a stockpile to a plant. Its body tips to dump the load.

The LTM 1060 is a mobile crane. It lifts heavy things—steel beams, transformers, pre-assembled modules—and places them within millimetres of where they need to go. It doesn’t carry a load hundreds of metres; it raises a load from the ground to a precise point.

If you’re moving 6,000 tonnes of overburden every shift, you don’t need a crane. If you’re setting a 23-tonne pump skid on a foundation 4 metres high, you don’t need a dump truck. The job site decides the machine.

Dimension 1: What the Job Actually Requires

The big mistake I see is comparing headline numbers. The LTM 1060 can lift up to 60 tonnes, while the TA 230 has a payload around 23 tonnes. On a spec sheet, the crane looks “stronger.” But that crane can’t drive across a boggy haul road to move material. And the truck can’t set a load on top of a column. Capacity is always capacity for a specific task.

The TA 230 is built for poor underfoot conditions. It has an articulated frame that twists over uneven ground and a steering system that is pretty tight for its size. It can climb steep ramps and work in mud that would swallow a standard highway truck.

The LTM 1060, on the other hand, is a road-mobile crane. It needs a level, prepared area with adequate ground bearing pressure before the outriggers go out. It travels legally on most public roads, then sets up on site. If the ground is soft, even a 60-tonne crane can tip. The machine itself is fine; the ground condition is the limit.

This is the first place where buyers go wrong. They focus on the machine and forget the ground underneath it.

Dimension 2: Travel, Setup, and Speed

The LTM 1060 wins on this dimension when you’re thinking about mobilisation. It’s self-propelled, and with proper permits it can drive from one job site to another. I’ve seen one arrive at 7 a.m., set up, and make its first lift by 10 a.m. For an emergency repair or a quick replacement job, that speed is exactly what you need.

The TA 230 is mobile enough on the mine or construction site, but it’s not a road vehicle for long distances. You’ll normally low-load it to the site and then let it roam. If you have a steep or muddy access road to deal with, the TA 230 can handle it—which is more than you can say for most crane carriers.

Put another way: the crane moves between tasks quickly; the truck moves material across tough terrain quickly. They’re both “fast” in very different contexts.

Dimension 3: The Cost That Appears After the Purchase

Let me be blunt: the purchase price is not the best way to choose between these two. The real cost shows up when the machine is down and you need it running. That was true in March 2024, when a quarry engineer named Miranda called me at 4 p.m. on a Tuesday. Her TA 230 had lost hydraulic pressure, and if the overburden wasn’t moved by Friday, her company risked a $50,000 penalty clause. The local dealer couldn’t schedule the repair until Monday.

We found a factory-trained technician—let’s call him Eddie—who happened to work independently about 30 minutes from the quarry. Searching “Eddie near me” isn’t usually how I source repair help, but that’s exactly what we did. Eddie had the TA 230 training, had the replacement pump in a regional parts bin, and was on site Wednesday morning. The truck was running by Wednesday afternoon.

The lesson isn’t that you need a random Eddie. It’s that service network and parts availability can outweigh the difference between any two models. A machine is only as good as the people who can fix it when something breaks. Before you pick a model, ask: Are replacement parts stocked locally? Is there a factory-trained technician within a couple of hours? What’s the average wait time for a repair in the middle of a project?

That answer often changes the total cost of ownership more than the initial price difference.

The “Skiing” Question as a Selection Tool

If you’ve ever looked up “what is skiing versus downhill skiing?”, you probably got a confusing set of answers. The short version is this: skiing is the general sport—it includes Nordic, backcountry, and downhill. Downhill skiing is one specific discipline, with fixed-heel bindings, shaped skis, and groomed slopes. The general term tells you “snow sport.” The specific term tells you exactly what gear and terrain to expect.

Liebherr model names work the same way. “Liebherr” tells you the brand. “TA 230” tells you it’s an articulated dump truck in the 23-tonne range. “LTM 1060” tells you it’s a mobile crane in the 60-tonne class. Once you understand the model code, you stop wasting time comparing trucks to cranes.

Which One Should You Choose?

There’s no universal winner, but there is a right choice for each operation:

  • Choose the TA 230 if your bottleneck is moving material—overburden, gravel, ore, broken concrete—across uneven ground, day after day.
  • Choose the LTM 1060 if your bottleneck is lifting and placing heavy items at height, or if you need a mobile crane that can reach multiple jobs quickly.
  • Choose both if your site has enough demand to keep each machine working most of the time. But don’t buy both on the first day. Measure your cycle times and lift plans for a few weeks first.
  • Choose neither if you’re not sure about the ground conditions, the access route, or the regular maintenance support. Fix that uncertainty before you spend money.

And if you’re in the middle of an emergency, call someone who handles rush orders for a living. Because when a 40-tonne motor is sitting in the pit and the clock is running, you won’t have time to read brochures.
